Excellent vision is definitely an underestimated attribute that athletes need in sports....height, weight, speed, strength, jumping ability, etc. are often mentioned when talking about a recruit or prospect....ever heard anyone mention "vision performance" when talking about a hot-shot baseball, football or basketball recruit? I didn't think so...read my article on Vision Performance.
Athletes need to know which eye is dominate especially in sports that require a ball. If you don't know which eye is dominate, get tested by an eye doctor.
Every athlete also needs to constantly improve hand-eye coordination. You can work on hand-eye coordination every day. Do drills like:
1. I always recommend that athletes jump rope to get better overall hand, eye and body coordination.
2. Playing games like ping pong improve your hand-eye coordination.
3. Play catch with the ball in your sport as much as possible. Training your hands and eyes repetitively can help you even catch a ball without looking, if needed in a game.
4. Improve your vision in these areas:
a. Dynamic Visual Acuity
b. Visual Recognition
c. Depth Perception
d. Visual Tracking or Focusing
There are vision performance specialists that can help you improve in these areas.
Don't forget to improve your vision while you're improving your strength and speed!

Dynamic Balance and Vision Performance Wins Super Bowl
The Super Bowl winning touchdown play showed us what dynamic balance, coordination and vision performance is all about.....Santonio Holmes made the incredible touchdown catch with a combination of all three....

What you might not know is that he missed a similar pass thrown his way on the previous play....I listened to his post-game interview and he explained that he missed the pass because he was concentrating too much on getting his feet down....he thought he had lost the game for his team.....until the very next play....
According to Holmes, he never jumped on the winning pass catch...instead, he coordinated his dynamic balance, hand-eye coordination and athletic ability to haul in the pass! Game over!
Holmes practices these techniques over and over and it paid off with a Super Bowl ring for him and the team! Great catch kid (and great throw)! Go to Disneyworld!
Read my articles about dynamic balance and vision performance.....you need both to perform at a high level in your sport! And, you can practice to improve both!
Train hard and smart!

Athletes Need Excellent Vision Performance
I spend many hours training athletes to improve their physical skills (strength, power, speed).
And, there is no doubt that these physical traits are critical for the athlete to succeed. Mental preparation, mental focus and mental toughness are also very important skills needed for athletic success.
Athletes also need outstanding visual performance to be successful in their sports. The vision I'm talking about is much more than 20/20 vision. Anyone can get lasik surgery today to improve eyesight to 20/20 (or very close). To compete at a high level, athletes need excellent vision performance. And, visual skills can be taught, trained and improved.
Athletes can improve vision performance in these areas:
1. Dynamic Visual Acuity
2. Visual Recognition
3. Depth Perception
4. Visual Tracking or Focusing
Companies have even developed tinted contact lenses to be used at certain times of the day to improve visual focus, tracking and depth perception.
Kevin Gee, a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, states "The biggest problem that athletes face is not knowing they can potentially see much better than 20/20 vision." Gee opened the Sports Vision Performance Center in January and uses tests to analyze what he calls the "visual system."
Gee continues, "The visual system is more than just 'what's the smallest line on the chart you can see.'" "The visual system consists of many things, but specifically for sports, depth perception, color, speed and accuracy of movements and contrast sensitivity -- or the ability to detect an object off a background." Gee and his staff can also test for visual skills such as timing, reaction time and peripheral awareness.
Add vision performance to the list of skills you will need to compete at a high level in your sport.
